Episode 73-Nate Johnson and Beard Battle LA#3

The Hi-Hat
August 01, 2018 by Scott Sykora in beard competition, charity events, entertainment, chat sesh, Chops

Nate Johnson of The Gentlemen's Social Club of Los Angeles is getting ready for Beard Battle Los Angeles 3 to benefit the Los Angeles Food Bank.  A circus sideshow event is the plan and beards and mustaches from all across the country will land in LA at The Hi-Hat club.  We chatted about his start in the beard world and how he developed his unique style and design of his chops to how we both deal with being introverted and deal with attention.  Nate talked about his influences from the 80's and shared a few fun stories of things his beard has been able to "achieve" for him. This was almost more of a fun chat session with Nate as we talked about so many more fun topics other than the competition coming up.  Please be sure to check this episode out, share it with your friends and make sure you are subscribed so you can listen to the latest episodes as they come out.  SUBSCRIBE here

It's a facial hair competition. The rules are simple: show up on time, be in the right category, and don't whine if you don't get first. It goes without saying, but artificial  hair is grounds for disqualification. Leave the weave at home (unless you're one of our wonderful whiskerinas).

With ten categories that run the gamut from close-cropped Business Beard to gnarly, balls-to-the-wall Full Beard Freestyle, there's a place for everyone, even the ladies. Check out our categories below and choose the one that's most appropriate for you. If you aren't sure, get the one that fits the closest and we'll help you find the right category on the day of.

Judging is based on aesthetic qualities including health, thickness, length, and color, in addition to how well the facial hair enhances the competitor's overall style.

For the sake of time, categories are capped at 40 entrants on a first-come, first-served basis.

Styling aids are aids which help shape the hair including wax, hairspray, gel, scotch tape, goat saliva, or whatever else you choose to use. Wires are not permitted.

All hair on the face counts toward your category. If you rock wicked mutton chops with that 'stache, that counts as a partial beard, not a moustache. We're not going to "Just ignore the soul patch, dude." When you show up you will be pre-judged to make sure you're in the right category, so make sure to register for the category that fits best.

NATURAL MOUSTACHE

Moustache hairs must not grow from beyond 1.5 centimeters past the corner of the lip. Styling aids are  forbidden, but conditioners and curlers are allowed.

STYLED MOUSTACHE

Moustache hairs must not grow from beyond 1.5 centimeters past the corner of the lip. All shapes and styles are allowed. Go ahead, impress us.

PARTIAL BEARD

All partial beard categories including sideburns, goatees, musketeers, and fu manchus. Styling aids are allowed but the emphasis is on grooming, not creativity.

PARTIAL FREESTYLE

Creatively styled partial beards belong in this category.  Styling aids are allowed and the wackier you can get, the better. Use your imagination.

FULL BEARD 4" AND UNDER
Short beards under 4", with emphasis on grooming and presentation. This is the category for new growers and all you white-collar types. Styling aids are not allowed.

FULL BEARD STYLED STACHE

Beards of any length are allowed. Hairs beyond 1.5 centimeters past the corner of the upper lip may not be styled. NO styling products are allowed in the beard (this includes hairspray)!

FULL BEARD UNDER 8"

Styling aids are NOT allowed for any part of the face. The beard must remain natural.

FULL BEARD OVER 8"

Styling aids are NOT allowed for any part of the face. The beard must remain natural.

FULL BEARD FREESTYLE

Our jaw-droppingest category. Styling aids are mandatory. It takes a lot to surprise us, but we know somebody out there is just waiting to blow our minds. Is it you?

WHISKERINA
This arts-and-craft category is strictly ladies only. From scrap metal to bacon to fake fur, virtually anything goes.

JUDGES

Our judges represent an assortment of some of competitive bearding's biggest stars. With hundreds of competitions under their combined belts, they've traveled the world and seen it all (or so they think). From world and national champions to well-traveled fellow Californians, you're in good hands with our panel.

The judging criteria is based on health, thickness, color, and length of the facial hair, in addition to how well it enhances the competitor's overall look. Presentation matters, folks. Contestants will be graded on a classic 10-scale, with each judge giving out one 10, one 9.5, and one 9 to their top three picks in every category.

Episode 72-Natali is... The Beardcaster

July 24, 2018 by Scott Sykora in beard competition, Whiskerina, charity events, goatee, entertainment

Beards Behind Bars 2 was held a few weeks back at the historic Ohio State Reformatory in Mansfield Ohio. The Beardcaster attended this event, where he placed 3rd to Luke Sumpter, 2nd place, and Butch Amos who won the goatee category. The best part of the evening was a tribute beard by Natali Johnston of the Holy City Beard and Mustache Society in the Whiskerina “Natural” category. When the Whiskerinas make “tribute” beards they usually pick an influential person in the bearding community and try to emulate their style, their look, and their facial hair as best as they can. Natali chose to make her tribute to me, The Beardcaster. She did such an amazing job with all the details she included in the tribute. The hair color was spot on and the outfit was on point. I had actually given Natali a microphone and recorder earlier in the afternoon so she could play around and record some silly stuff. Little did I know she was going to use those [pieces to complete her best masterpiece yet! I had planned on getting some crowd interviews at this event, which was presented by Beards Of The Old Northwest and Duck River Beard Co., but I left that to Natali as I felt she would do a fantastic job!

Natali interviewed many people and gave me about 3+ hours of tape to go through! I spent many hours going through the first hour plus and was able to put together this episode. She talked to a few attendants and it was really entertaining to hear her use some of my phrases and for people to tell her what a great job she did replicating my look. She then interviewed all of the judges for the event and asked them all what they were looking for from the contestants that were to be critiqued. I was very honored and proud of the job she did and still can’t believe that she picked me to tribute. Be sure to visit www.thebeardcaster.com/blog/72 to see all the photos from the event. I hope you enjoy!
